Dignity Manufacturing gains environmental management certification
Dignity coffin manufacturing facility in Hutton Cranswick, East Yorkshire, has gained ISO14001 certification.
ISO14001 is an internationally accepted standard that sets out how you can go about putting in place an effective Environmental Management System. The standard is designed to address the delicate balance between maintaining profitability and reducing environmental impact.
Dignity’s voluntary application for ISO14001 began in June 2010 with an assessment of the environmental impact of the business from the sourcing of raw materials to emissions to land, air and water during manufacture to energy sources and transportation. From this the management set targets for reducing the environmental impact of their business and developed a programme for implementing them. The review and improvements were independently approved and regularly audited by BM TRADA Certification Ltd with goals set for continual improvement.
"I am delighted to receive the ISO14001 accreditation," said general manager, John Burn. "Not only did we achieve this at the first attempt but we did it without the use of external consultants."
Continued John: "Caring for the environment is very important to many of the clients that choose a Dignity funeral director and our ISO and FSC® C009662 certifications show that a Dignity coffin is an environmentally sound option. We are not only conforming to all relevant environmental legislation but exceeding it. I believe this is important for the image of manufacturing in the UK in light of several high profile environmental disasters involving British companies."
Employing around 40 people and manufacturing in excess of 60,000 coffins per year, Dignity has one of the most modern and efficient manufacturing facilities in the UK and a distribution network running from the North East of Scotland to the South West of England, Wales and Ireland.
