On Monday 8 June 2009, the Mayor of Rotherham, Shaukat Ali, accompanied by the Mayoress, Miss Wajida Naseem, cut a ribbon at Rotherham Crematorium Chapel to mark the official opening of the new gardens of remembrance, a bereavement services administration centre, the grounds maintenance department and improvements to the crematorium.
Among the many local councillors who also attended the official opening was Councillor Akhtar, lead member for bereavement services. Also present was John Rotherham, the President of the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities and directors of the other companies involved in the development project, Baggerley Construction and Glendale Managed Services. Members of the public were also welcome to attend the official opening and were able to view the improved grounds and crematorium.
Jennifer Yardley, crematoria regional manager, said: “The investment in these improvements demonstrates that we aim to provide the local community with the highest possible standards of service and facilities that are second to none. The new gardens of remembrance are beautiful and provide a tranquil place for bereaved families to remember their loved ones.”
